Summertime

Summertime in Missouri is HOT.  HOT and HUMID.  And at Down On The Farm, summertime means garden time.  Our garden got a bit of a late start because it was so cold and damp, but it's doing great now.   These are green beans.  We LOVE 'em.  We'll probably can 150 quarts of green beans this year.  Have I mentioned we eat a lot of green beans?

And since the cows get hungry too, we bale lots and lots of these babies.

YUM!  At least I think that's what these cows are thinking as they look across the fence at the hay bales.  Doesn't that cow looking straight at you seem to be saying YUM??

And then there are THESE guys.  They don't get out much.  Actually, they don't get out at all.  Until they head to the processing plant.

It is so pretty this time of year.

And you remember that fire pit we made last summer?  Well, here it is.  We have spent many evenings sitting around that fire pit.  And I've eaten several steaks grilled on that fire pit.  And just in case you're wondering . . . NO, we do NOT burn the wood on top of the grate.  I just stacked the wood on top of the grate so I could mow the yard.

How about that corn?  Doesn't that look YUMMY!!!!  Later this year we're gonna grill some ears of corn over our fire pit.  After we freeze many, many, quarts of corn.  We ran out of corn this year.  We eat a lot of corn.  So we must freeze MORE CORN.  In fact, we planted three more rows of corn after I took this picture.

And these tomato plants.  WOW!  That is fresh salsa waitin' to happen people!!!!

Corn.  Yum.

Yes, life is busy, but good here at Down On The Farm!  Thank you Lord for your many blessings!

  1. I know it's wrong, but I am a little jealous of your fire pit ;) I think I told you that last summer too. It is p-e-r-f-e-c-t. You and yours always do a fabulous job on the gardens too!! And canning. I'm going to try to do better this year, but my garden plot isn't very big. Also, even though your turkeys don't get out, they look quite happy and content where they are. Lookin' good! Have a wonderful remainder to your week. -Tammy

  2. Well thank you Tammy! We really love it. I think we spent about $80 on those blocks at Lowes, and it took us an hour or so to unload the blocks and stack them up! Money WELL SPENT!!! As to the garden, my husband does WAY more work in the garden than I do, so I have to give him a LOT of the credit! And, I've been trying to post a comment to your blog for quite awhile and it won't let me????

  7. How beautiful it must be to live on a farm. A long time dream of mine that I am determined will come true...one day. Living off my land when (before) we retire is my long term goal!

  8. Oh this is all wonderful. Warmth?? What's that! (We're still in the low 50s :(
I have tomatoes for the first time this year, but they're all inside a greehouse - no chance of them surviving outside in this wind, sadly. But I'm looking forward to salsa too..... watch this space!!

  11. Love your fire pit! And your veggies look great, too. We've not had much luck so far this year. Our garden just stays wet too long, I think. Our corn is a bust...it's knee high and already tasseling. The tomatoes by the house look good, tho. I used to do a lot of canning and freezing, it's a lot of work but so rewarding. Have a great day!
