My Grandma

It's been awhile since I posted about my Grandma Flo.  She's 96.  Last spring the doctors diagnosed her with cancer and told us she had days to live.  Since then she's been in her own home and my mom and her siblings have taken care of her.  This has been physically and mentally exhausting and they have reached the end of their rope.  On Tuesday, they put her in the nursing home.

Physically, Grandma is very weak, but she isn't sick, or in pain.  Mentally, Grandma isn't doing well at all.  She is so confused.  She doesn't know our family most of the time.  She says very mean, hurtful things.  She is demanding and uncooperative.  The last time I was there, she didn't recognize me.

I know putting my Grandma in the nursing home is one of the hardest things my mother has ever had to do.  The thought that one day I could put my mother in a nursing home, well, it breaks my heart.

I took this picture of my Grandma on the 4th of July, 2009.

I would ask for your continued prayers for my mom and her family, and for my Grandma.  I love her so, and I miss the Grandma that remembered me.

  1. Oh, I know that hurts. I have a grandma who's still living--age 98? 99?--who is in a nursing home in Florida. When I think of her there it just pains me. I pray your Grandma will not suffer long.

  2. I know how much your hurting. I felt like you with my Aunt after my Mom died. I didn't know her anymore and she didn't know CH or me. Prayers for you, your Grandma and your family for the strength you need.

  3. That is a hard decision. I know your Mom and siblings will get a well deserved break. Being a caretaker is difficult. Will remember ya'll in prayer. Remember the good times and remind Grandma of them too when you see her.

  5. Aging parents are a very difficult thing to watch.
You can't take things to heart that they say or do in their last years.
If they thought for one moment they had hurt anyone they would be apologizing, they just don't realize how they sound. Hang in there, remember her with your fondest memories and let the rest go.
In prayer for grandma and your family.

  8. My heart goes out to you, your momma and all your family. My mom is 74 and has Alzheimers. My dad passed away this July. We have had to take my mom away from her home and now lives in Texas with my sister and husband. It was and is so hard as she still thinks my dad is alive and that they will be HOME soon. I understand the anguish and heartache you must feel. I dread beyond words the thought of my mom reaching the point of not knowing me. There is a comfort in knowing that "others" understand and are going through it as well and we can comfort and be there for each other. God's grace helps us. God's love supports us and gives us the courage to go through each day. My prayers go up for all your family and for ease through this very tough situation. You will be in my thoughts.

  12. My prayers are with your Grandma. My Grandma is also 96, soon to be 97 in a couple of weeks in fact. She was just placed in the nursing home a few months ago, after living on her own to that point. Pretty impressive that these ol' girls can do that for so long, I think. I know it's tough.. but realistically I think most places give good care. And I don't worry about my Grandma so much now (she nearly burned her house down earlier this year). Hugs!! -Tammy
