Popcorn the Old Fashioned Way

The other night after supper Cole asked me if we had any popcorn.  I told him we did, and asked if he wanted some.  Then, I remembered I had popped the last bag of microwave popcorn a couple of weeks ago.  So I told him that while I didn't have any microwave popcorn, I could pop him some in a pan.  The look he gave me told me that he had absolutely no idea what I was talking about.   My husband and I spent the next 10 minutes trying to explain to the kids that "back in the olden days," before microwave ovens (yes, I am THAT old), we popped corn in oil in a pan, shaking the pan while it was cooking to stir up the kernels.  Then we started laughing when we remembered "Jiffy Pop" popcorn.  Do you remember that?  In the little aluminum pan with the foil top that grew and grew as the popcorn popped?

We didn't have that cool Jiffy Pop popcorn at our house very often, and my husband didn't either.  Our moms thought it was too expensive and wouldn't buy it.  But once in awhile we could get them to buy one of those cool pans and we would stand there mesmerized by that foil lid growing bigger and bigger with each POP!

I can't believe that my children had no concept of popcorn, other than coming from the microwave.  I mean, it hasn't been THAT long ago has it?????  Ahhh, the good old days!

  1. Ah yes, Jiffy Pop was too expensive for our house too when I was growing up! We always had the pan-shaking kind as well. The first time I had JP was a sleep over at one of my BFF's house. It's funny, I always thought they were 'rich' because it seemed they could afford such "luxuries" as Jiffy Pop :) These days, just give me my one point weight watcher Jiffy Pop microwave popcorn, please! Thanks for the memories ;) Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours! Love your header btw! -Tammy

  2. I've made my popcorn the old fashioned way since I was a little girl. Now I use the whirly pop, but it's still on the stove and we make it 3 or 4 nights a week!!! Great investment!!! The kids friends love to come over and have popcorn here!!!!

Jiffy pop!! Too expensive at our house too, but a special treat once in awhile. I always take some camping with us and there's something about that big foil bag popping up that makes it a real treat!!!

  3. To me this is the only way to pop popcorn. In fact I actually have the popcorn pan from when I was growing up. It is ugly and can't be used for anything but popcorn but I treasure it! I popcorn a couple times a week.

  5. I'm your peep!! That's me! I can add to your story! My kids had no idea either so now I have Jiffy in my pantry! HA! But we too were too "poor" to afford it on a regular basis so we did oil and corn as well.
    I got that same look...like I was a dinosaur!
    We have to stick together!

  6. Seems like a lot of us didn't have Jiffy Pop in the pantry because it was "too expensive"...boy how times have changed. Popcorn the old-fashioned way is so much better and I need to introduce my kids to it too.

    Happy Thanksgiving!
